Make a Difference for Watkins Mill HS Athletics

Watkins Mill High School (Montgomery Village, MD) is in serious need of an ice machine to keep its athletes safe. In honor of our 25th reunion and the 30th anniversary of the school, we are helping our school raise money to make this much-needed purchase.
Why the ice machine? Watkins Mill officials say their ice situation is “dire,” and that kids immediately need better access to water and hydration. More ice is needed in case of a heat-illness emergency and so Watkins Mill meets the National Athletic Trainers’ Association standards. Dirty ice is being used from the science department for multiple sports. Athletic department officials are purchasing ice bags at stores every morning.
Purchasing bags of ice bags daily is not enough ice, and it’s a real safety concern. Heat illness during practice or competition is a leading cause of death and disability among U.S. high school athletes. All heat illnesses in high school athletes are preventable, but quick action to cool the body is needed.
We recognize that there are many needs across academics and non-sports activities. The principal, Mrs. Goddard, has indicated that this is what the school needs the most right now. Athletics has a particular budget gap, because the Booster club is expected to raise all the funds for new equipment (there is no formal budget for them) and they cannot do this alone. Having a new ice machine would positively impact athletes by creating a safer and more sanitary environment.
Please consider donating to this important cause. Any amount you can afford would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Watkins Mill Class of 1994 Reunion Committee (Jennifer Marchetti, Alexandra Levit, Rebecca Andino, Jon Solomon, Abi Smigel and Liz Massey) and the Watkins Mill Booster Club
