In the coastal haven of the 805, where the rhythmic pulse of the ocean meets the sun-soaked shores, a tale of resilience, friendship, and the pioneering spirit of women’s surfing is about to unfold in "Queens of the Break."
Capturing the essence of a bygone era when women dared to challenge the waves and redefine the sport, "Queens of the Break" is a short documentary that pays homage to the unsung heroines of surfing. Shot almost entirely on 16mm film, this project is a love letter to the pioneers of women's surfing on the central coast, and it weaves together a narrative that spans over 50 years.
Our story follows a group of extraordinary women, bound not only by their shared love for the ocean but by a friendship that has weathered the tides of time. Through the lens of a 1960's Bolex H16 Reflex camera, we aim to transport audiences to an era when these Queens of the Break dared to ride waves, break stereotypes, and create a legacy that deserves to be celebrated.
Young female directors Jo Anna Edmison and Jordyn Romero, with their fresh and innovative approach to storytelling, are committed to honoring the legacy of the Queens of the Break. By shooting almost entirely on film, they seek to capture the essence of an era when the ocean was not just a playground but a canvas for breaking barriers and fostering enduring friendships.
We are already in the process of bringing this captivating story to life, by creating the 7 minute film that premiered at Mountainfilm in 2023, but we need your support to finance the remainder of the project. Every dollar contributes to expanding our vision, allowing us to dive deeper into the untold stories of these surfing pioneers and share their triumphs, challenges, and the unbreakable bond that connects them.
By supporting "Queens of the Break," you are not just funding a documentary; you are becoming a part of a movement to preserve the history of women's surfing in the California. Your contribution will enable us to capture more interviews, maintain music rights, and showcase the beauty of the ocean through the rich, timeless texture of 16mm film.
