Our communities are being challenged on so many fronts as we are all experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic.. First and foremost, loved ones are being lost, family members, friends and neighbors, as the corona virus rages on. We deeply grieve for those losses and for the harm done.
We are also grieving other significant losses as one small business after another is having to close its doors. One storefront after another is empty now of thriving, community-oriented businesses. Places that offered us relationships of familiarity, intimacy and personal acquaintance as we shopped for goods and services. Places that began as people’s dreams and were manifest through sheer will of imagination and hard work against all odds but not able to manage against a pandemic of historic proportion. These places are not making it through. The landscape of our local culture and communities is showing the signs of closure and the evidence of devastating distress.
I am writing, thinking about one of these small businesses and on behalf of those who run it as truly family owned and operated.
MUSE CAFE has been a thriving cafe on the corner of 12th Street and 6th Avenue in Brooklyn for the past 6 years and where I have lived since 1984. This cafe opened its doors and offered a place to be welcomed in and to stay, to work, to meet, to linger, to be fed good wholesome food for so many in our community. Brothers George and Luis and all who work there tirelessly have made a place in which they strive to do their best in the most personal way possible.
Now, due to the pandemic they are all at risk. This risk threatens tremendous loss for the many families whose income depends on MUSE CAFE surviving and coming through this challenging time.
We are all in this together. We say those words and we must mean it. In so many ways we can join together to see this through.
Let’s help MUSE CAFE stay open. If we save MUSE CAFE we save a place of community and love and in no small measure that has a ripple effect.
