We Choose Freedom: Bicentennial Commemoration

2024 will mark the 200th anniversary of the little-known history of African American migrations to Haiti/Hispaniola. We are an organizing collective facilitating the transnational celebration of this migration's 200-year anniversary.

Brief History

After Spanish Haiti and the Republic of Haiti were integrated into one nation in 1822, invitations were extended in 1824 to freed African American communities in the United States to help build the first Black republic in the Americas. Between 1824-1826, upwards of 13,000 African Americans emigrated from the United States to Haiti, which then governed the whole island of Hispaniola.

As part of the commemoration of this historic event we will be helping to organize and support events in the Dominican Republic and various locations in the US. We will use the funds to organize the Bi-Centennial events celebration to be held in Samaná. From July 14-21, 2024 a series of events, workshops and collection of oral histories and artifacts will kick off the commemorations.

Funds will also be used to develop a community based exhibit that will be showcased in Samaná, DR during the Harvest Celebration events the 26-27th of October 2024. The exhibit will engage with various archives and include community images, and documents with a focus on the lived realities in the various locations they departed from and arrived at, to highlight the process and decision-making behind the migration.

In December 2024, we will continue the commemoration with additional community based events and a commemorative march of the descendants showcasing the various last names that still wander the hills of Samaná

In addition to the exhibit, a digital database of historical documents pertaining to the birth, baptism, and marriage of community members has been developed and will continue to add additional document to it. https://www.jstor.org/site/ccny/samana-archive/ ,

Lastly, a website with various historical and contemporary resources will be unveiled, and a series of panels and public conversations in New York, Philadelphia and Texas will highlight the stories of these emigrants who ventured across the sea and departed from various ports in the eastern seaboard including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York in search of freedom.

2024 marcará el 200 aniversario de la poco conocida historia de las migraciones afroamericanas a Haití/La Española. Somos un colectivo organizador que facilita la celebración transnacional del 200 aniversario de esta migración.

Breve historia
