#Helping an ACA Sister - Cooling Cap For Chemo Treatments
Tanya Burke (AKA T. Burke), 22-A-87, has come through her breast cancer surgery strong – Stage 1/no lymph node involvement/no metastasis, but classified as Triple Negative, meaning chemotherapy is recommended.
In order to help minimize, or alleviate hair loss, a cooling cap has been recommended to use during her chemo treatments. She needs a cap for each of her four chemo sessions. Each cap, one time use only, is $500, for a total of $2000. Insurance, unfortunately, does not cover the cost of the caps. There may be scholarships available but limited. Per her oncologist, she contacted the Rapunzael Project but they do not give financial assistance to individuals. The cooling cap is new technology in the U.S. It has been used in the U.K. for years. Tanya is pioneering the cap in her treatment center, as one of the only two African-American women using it. The cap is most effective if it can get very close to the scalp, which is a challenge for curly haired women. Tanya hopes to be able to share positive results, experiences and guidance for other African American at the end of this 12 week journey.
We are praying against the other side effects of fatigue, low blood count, diarrhea or constipation, mouth soreness, dry skin, dry eyes and numbness and tingling of the hands and feet and any others developing.
In a show of sisterly support and tangible love, her line sisters have established a Go Fund Me Account to help defray, or pay for, the costs of the 4 cooling caps. We have had one other impromptu fundraiser, and other line sisters have been supporting T Burke in other ways. It was recommended that we enlarge her group of supporters to include the Alpha Chapter Alumnae FB page by establishing this account for the purpose of funding her cooling caps.
Our goal is $2266 to cover the cost of the 4 caps, related expenses and fees. Any other funds that come in above the goal, will help her defray other treatment-related costs. Any donation towards this cause will be appreciated. Please consider supporting T. Burke financially this week as she begins the next phase of her breast cancer treatment and cure. For a hypothetical payment of $50, the total administrative costs subtracted would be $1.75; for a hypothetical payment of $100, the total administrative costs subtracted would be $3.20.
