Olivia & Mar fire relief fund & covid crisis
edit***
Hello community. I am editing this go fund me that I had originally started to help keep my partner’s business afloat during the Covid-19 crisis.
I am writing to inform you that the night of March 27, Olivia and I escaped a fire in our home. We woke up to overwhelming smoke and flames, our living room was on fire. Flames were coming out of our wall heater. The fire department had confirmed that it was due to faulty wiring.
We are so lucky that we were able to escape with our dog Nala and we are so so grateful to have a loving community sending us so much love and support.
During this horrifying time for everyone with the COVID19 virus craziness, we find ourselves without work & stability, and now without our home. All of my dj and audio gear is damaged so I will not be able to live stream Dj sets from home so I am just truly shook.
At the end of the day we are truly lucky to be alive. I urge you to check with your landlord if you have a old wall heater and guarantee that your wiring has been updated. Thank you for taking the time to read and we cannot wait to reconnect with our community, In person, in the future.
with love and gratitude,
Mar Mendoza

Hi there, I am raising money for Beauty Botanica, a queer hair salon in Downtown Oakland owned by my beautiful and amazing partner Olivia. She is a Xicana from East Oakland and has been slaying hair and touching hearts for 14 years. Olivia opened Beauty Botanica 5 years ago and since then it has become a healing sanctuary, cultural space, and shining gem in the QTPOC community. Olivia opens the space to hold fundraisers, art shows, healing circles, workshops, yoga sessions, and more - at no cost to the facilitators.
Her space is an example of what Oakland culture is about. With spaces like these closing all the time in the Bay Area, we must do all we can to keep it thriving.
Like a lot of small businesses, Beauty Botanica has been hit hard because of the COVID19 Pandemic. First there were many cancellations and now with the shelter in place ordinance, Beauty Botanica’s doors are closed.
I am creating this go fund me to ensure Botanica’s doors remain open. If you are in a position to do so, please donate to a space that uplifts the community and uplifts Oakland’s culture. Thank you!!
Mar Mendoza
