Dear Friends,
I’m sad to share that on Friday, May 6th, 2022 this world lost a legend. Melvin "Mel" Louis Grayson lost his long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Mel was an amazing friend, a devoted brother, uncle, son, and father, but more than anything, an extraordinary teacher and a true icon in the fashion industry.
He had a long and diligent career in fashion and interior design, paving the way and opening many doors to those who came after him. As a professor at FIDM for many years, he enjoyed passing on his vast wealth of knowledge to the next generation who loved him and would eagerly learn from this industry giant. Given out by the student body, Mel was the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Member award- a huge honor. His pure talent, gift for gab, and sense of style took him far in his field. His opinion, his eye, and his intuition were always sought-after. He was a natural teacher, both in and out of the classroom. After spending time with Mel, you would always leave a bit smarter, better informed, and genuinely inspired. Right to the end he, remained positive, spreading his love and light, uplifting words, and great advice to the people he cared about.
Unfortunately, the start of the pandemic also brought more bad news regarding his own health and suddenly, he was no longer able to work. He began struggling financially but told no one. He didn’t complain & he never asked for help. He didn't want to be a burden. Instead, he continued helping other people. He continued to inspire. He continued doing what brought him the most enjoyment in life. Through his example, he taught us what it meant to be kind and truly generous. He passed away, leaving that legacy behind.
The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively. -Bob Marley
With humble gratitude, we ask for donations to assist Mel's family with a memorial, a burial, and moving expenses from his home.
We thank you so very much. We hope you’ll be able to join us in a memorial to celebrate Mel's well-lived, well-loved, fabulous, legendary life.
