WE NEED YOUR HELP IN SAVING OUR NAME
Donation protected
Hello,
The Change The Name Coalition is an organization that supports the Homer G. Phillips Nurses Alumni Inc.® in protecting the historical name of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital. We need your support for this worthy mission.
Attorney Homer G. Phillips was an African American lawyer who advocated for a hospital to serve black residents in St. Louis, Missouri. This hospital was built in 1937 and provided state-of-the-art training to the largest number of black doctors and nurses in the world. The world-class hospital had 670 beds. Sadly, in 1979 the hospital closed with much distress due to the refusal of funding by St. Louis City.
Today a privately-owned 3-bed facility located near the intersection of Jefferson and Cass (in St. Louis, Missouri) bears the name of the historic Homer G. Phillips Hospital. This is a dishonor to our historic hospital and an infringement of the registered trademark of the Homer G. Phillips Nurses Alumni Inc.®
St. Louis community, civic, political, and religious leaders have called on the non-minority private owner of the 3-bed facility to change the name. He has refused.
Prominent amongst those calling on the private developer to change the name of the 3-bed facility are Congresswoman Cori Bush, St. Louis City Mayor Tishaura Jones, St. Louis City Comptroller Darlene Green, St. Louis President of the Board of Alderwomen Megan Green, St. Louis License Collector Mavis Thompson, St. Louis City Treasurer Adam Layne, Missouri State Senator Karla May, Missouri State Senator Steve Roberts, and numerous Missouri State Representatives. Members of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen passed Board Resolution No. 138 accusing the private developer of “inappropriately, culturally appropriating Homer G. Phillips Hospital name” and calling on him to change the name. He has refused.
The Change The Name Coalition is asking for your help to defend and protect our name. Donations will cover the costly legal and administrative fees needed to prevent this privately owned 3-bed facility from using our distinguished name.
