WE ROLL WITH TODD to help with medical costs

As some of you may know Todd has been dealing with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or more commonly know as ALS.

It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. THERE IS NO CURE!

Imagine…..being told “there is no cure for this devastating disease no matter what you do, what medicines, what doctors, you will likely have 2-5 years to live and during that time, you will lose your ability to walk, eat or breath on your own, you will lose your ability to speak, lose your ability to move your body in any way, you will become fully dependent on machines and other people for all of your needs.”

In the face of this daunting reality, Todd married the love of his life, Kristin. Together, they embody the strength, love and resolve it takes to fight this battle.

Although, the courage and resilience they show is to be commended it doesn’t pay the mounting medical cost. In the past few months they have had to purchase a custom power wheelchair (approx $25,000), a fully accessible mobility van (approx $35,000), an Alternative Augmented Communication Device (approx $15,000), complete bathroom renovation (approx 8,000), durable medical equipment such as hoyer lift, ramps, lift chair and equipment for bathing safely (approx $10,000) and the list goes on…

The ALS Foundation and Team Gleason have assisted with some of the cost. While very generous, it is not enough to cover the countless medications, cost of required machines (non-invasive ventilator, cough assist machine, suction machine) and the nursing care that is needed as Todd declines. With all of that they of course have the the mortgage, utilities and the day to day bills.

ALS has not only attacked Todd, it shattered Kristin and she took a leave from her job as a scrub nurse to care for the love of her life as he needs round the clock care.

It has also shattered all of us that know and love Todd. It is hard to believe that just over a year ago, Todd’s was dedicated to his job, driving a semi-trailer all over the state. Kristin was working many hours at her job that she loves at the hospital taking care of others. Now, they have no choice but to ask for assistance to fight this battle with ALS.
