The Film
Larry Walters is 15,000 feet in the air. He’s thirsty, he has sunburn and he’s sat on a lawn chair suspended by 42 weather balloons.
Larry Walters has always dreamed of flying. From the age of 13 he has seen the planes and the birds and wished to be among them. One day passing an army navy surplus store he saw a cluster of weather balloons floating from the stores canopy. From that age on he had an idea.
Fast-forward to 1982 Larry is now 33 he is about to embark on his first test flight. Having failed to join the air force due to his poor eyesight his second option logically was to create his own flying vehicle. Now on October 2nd, 1982 Larry is going to test his creation. He plans to float 30 feet above his house take some observational photos and come back down. His fiancé Carol Van Duesen and his best friend Ron, yes just Ron, act as his ground team and aim to stay in contact with Larry on his short but promising first flight.
However, like any good plan it goes awry. The tethers holding Larry above his Los Angeles house snap and away he goes. Travelling at 10 meters a minute Larry ascends into the heavens. On the way up he loses his glasses and his camera don’t worry he has his beer and a bb gun. His plan now rapidly changes this is no longer a test flight this is the real deal. His plan is to now fly his chair all the way to the Mojave Desert and shoot the balloons to safely descend and make his way home. What Larry failed to account for is the wind patterns. Instead of drifting lazily towards the desert, like he initially planned. The wind decided to blow him out to sea and over to LAX, the largest and busiest airport on the west coast.
On top of that Larry had ascended far higher than initially expected he sat at 15,000 feet at that moment he was the highest living person on the planet. On a clear day at that height he could have seen the curvature of the earth. Imagine that. Larry couldn’t though because he’d lost his glasses.
In Larry’s mind at 15,000 feet blind, sunburnt and thirsty one can only theorise what those four walls would look like. Who he’d be speaking to or what he was even thinking? At 15,000 we propose what if he could talk to his younger self, the people he influenced and even his older self. No one knows what Larry saw up there not even Larry himself. But what if we could.
A visual art poem that attempts to explore the character of Larry Walters and his life whilst also attempting to tell the stranger than fiction story of his flight.
