The decision to write this post did not come easily. How much of this family’s intimate journey do we share?
On January 16, 2020 Eryn and Zac welcomed Noah Curtis Shifflett into the world. The most beautiful, smiling rainbow baby
On May 2nd, Eryn, Zac and Noah began a journey they never in a million years imagined. While visiting family in Guntersville, they noticed that something was wrong with 3 1/2 month old Noah. They immediately drove back to their Pediatric doctor in Birmingham. Once Noah arrived at St. Vincent’s Hospital, his oxygen levels were so low, and his CO2 was too high. The Doctor said he wouldn’t wait for any tests to come back, and Noah was transported by ambulance to Children’s Hospital where he was admitted into the PICU. Noah immediately began to receive breathing assistance and fluids. At this point we thought the doctors would come back with a diagnosis of a virus, or something that would be a quick fix...how could this perfectly healthy, smiley baby boy have anything wrong with him?
Eryn and Zac have now spent a month in the PICU with Noah with no diagnosis. Noah has been such a fighter. Spinal taps, MRI’s, blood tests, EKG’s, genetics tests, Botulism treatment, IVIG, you name it, Noah has fought through it. Additionally, mom and dad have been just as strong for him. Noah has been on a ventilator since May 7th at midnight. They attempted to extubate Noah on May 14th, but Noah’s body was not ready. Noah has made so much progress by regaining muscle movement throughout his little body, but for some reason his muscles cannot exchange oxygen and CO2 how they should. Eryn and Zac have made the hard decision to move forward with a tracheostomy to allow a more comfortable time for Noah, so that he can move more freely and exercise his muscles. The doctors are unsure. They say this may be a form of neuropathy. It might be a genetic disorder. It could be anything. Despite the unknown, we are praying and believing that he will be healed in Jesus name.
The outpouring of love the Shifflett’s have already felt has been incredible. The far-reaching power of this amazing, young family has blessed so many lives. They’ve always shown up in our lives and helped so many of us feel like we are not alone through our own hardships. Now, we feel it is time we show our friends that they are never alone, and we will help see them through this journey.
We all feel so helpless. We know many of you do too and want a way to help. No visitors being allowed in the hospital has made it even harder to show our support. Yet, we can all come together and send our support. Alleviating the added financial stresses that are inevitable in situations like these is one thing we can help with. We understand that these can be difficult times for many of us. We appreciate anything you feel you are led to give for our sweet Noah.
Please continue to pray for healing, peace and answers.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
