Weathering the Storm: Support for Andy Hazelton

We need your help! Andy is the guy in the office who loves his job and coworkers. His enthusiasm is contagious. But on Thursday, February 27th, Dr. Andrew Hazelton lost his job at the National Weather Service in the most recent government layoffs.

Andy has a heart of gold. He is a family man and foster parent. He and his wife Caroline support a family of 4 children. As Andy and Caroline search for next steps and work to protect their family, we are asking for your help. Let's give them some peace of mind while they weather this storm.

For those of you who might not have had the pleasure of meeting Andy, he has been on the forefront of hurricane prediction improvements for about a decade. We first met him as an eager intern and bonded over experiences attending graduate school at Florida State University. After completing his degrees, Andy returned as a full-time hurricane research scientist eager to serve. During that time, Andy did a lot of cool research and even flew into the eye of a hurricane an incredible 87 times! All this for the sake of the NOAA mission, to save lives and protect property.

Andy recently took up a new challenge. He accepted a position at the National Weather Service to help improve our hurricane weather models. His decade of experience in hurricane research made him the perfectly qualified and sought-after candidate for the job. And he brought his enthusiasm, skills, and expert knowledge to this role every day.

But his willingness to serve others did not stop at work. He and Caroline became foster parents—on top of parenting three children of their own—in 2019. Since that time, they have fostered five children for several months and even more for shorter periods. Their current foster child has been with them for almost two years.

His love for others is evident in everything he does. He and Caroline have dedicated their lives to our communities near and far. Please consider giving back to Andy, his wife, and children during this time of uncertainty.
