Weaving Together to Support DP Residents in Irl

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far! We're giving this project a big push on Sunday 9th Feb 2020, by holding a "Weave-a-thon" in This is Knit. Lisa and her sister Jenny will be weaving side-by-side, racing to see who can complete a full scarf first in just a few short hours.

There will be a fair share of competitive glaring, baked goods, and good-natured name-calling, as these two (completely) amateur weavers create two scarves that will be raffled off among everyone who donates before midnight on Sunday 9th Feb.

There'll also be a chance to WIN some skeins of the original yarn used in these projects, so please do donate today if you can.

Funds raised from the "Weaving Together" project will be split 50/50 between "Doras" and "Cooking for Freedom": two valuable organisations that support people living in Direct Provision in Ireland.

Doras is an independent NGO. They provide a free and confidential advice and legal information service on immigration-related issues including asylum applications; Direct Provision; Family Reunification; employment rights and reporting racism.

Cooking for Freedom is a community of women who live in Direct Provision, who come together once or twice a month to cook together in borrowed kitchens so that they can feed their families culturally appropriate food. Residents in DP are not permitted to cook for themselves. The outlet of creating meals for their families is invaluable to both the physical and mental health of asylum seekers living in DP Centres.

The funds raised from this project will help Doras to continue fighting for the overhaul of the DP system in Ireland, while also having an immediate and practical impact for the members of Cooking for Freedom.
