Web series GREEN CARD: A LOVE STORY

Wow! Thanks for dropping in to see what we are about. I really appreciate it!

Famed novelist Alice Walker said: “If art doesn’t make us better, then what on earth is it for?

Throughout my life, I’ve interpreted my favorite Walker quote as a charge to tell critical Caribbean stories about our lives on the islands and in the diaspora. I’ve written plays like “Flambeaux” that won awards, curated talk-shops, and knuckled down to wrote a novel “The True Nanny Diaries.” That pales, I think, to my current purpose: to film a five-episode comedy-drama, “Green Card: A Love Story.”

I have three main objectives in this project:
(1) To support a compassionate conversation around Black and Brown immigration.
(2) Buttress the “Black” voice in the immigration debate.
(3) Produce and grow excellent Caribbean-American cinema.
(4) Establish a scholarship fund for Dreamers.

The story revolves around Caribbean-born Petra, who is without a green card for 15 years but won’t end her love affair with America: yet. Each day, the once-aspiring scientist focuses on life’s other wildcards, like fixing her fiancee, Philo, who sings for donations on the New York City trains. Facing life in Brooklyn, New York on his alms, and her own erratic pay as a health care, Petra bunks at night in a storefront tax office, silently weighing the cost of love, and the price of dreams.

“Green Card: A Love Story” has a sharp, subtle duality. Yes, there is the poignant love between the leading couple Philo and Petra, but under it all is the love of an immigrant for America. We have the creatives down pat: a well-developed pilot, an amazing director, actors and film crew. But to be frank we need YOU! I am inviting you to help us make art that makes lives better.

Community partners and crowdfunding is the way we are going to get this done. With your help we will be able to meet our budget of 7,000. We are here for the long haul in creating a product we will all be proud of. Please donate, every dollar counts!

Warmly,
