Weightlifting Shed

Hi all! I’m Charelle. I am from Kewa Pueblo in New Mexico. I have been Olympic lifting for about two years now. Prior to Olympic lifting I did Crossfit for about a year and a half. For most of the pandemic now, I have been training outdoors in Northern New Mexico. Over the last few days we had our first snow storm. Though I pushed through I cold, I have a growing worry that the weather this winter could inhibit my ability to train in a safe environment. I started this GoFundMe to raise money to build a shed in which I can continue to Olympic lift.
At the start of the 2020 Pandemic, I was flying home to New Mexico from New Haven, CT, where I was finishing up my final year of my undergrad. Shorty after I arrived to New Mexico emails from my university urged students not to return to campus and to prepare for online learning. Since I was training with New Haven Weightlifting Club while in school, I had to immediately make arrangements to continue training from home. My Olympic training area started out in March as only a slab of concrete, an old 35-lb training bar, 65 lbs in change plates, and an old squat rack that had been rusting outside year-round. Much of this journey is shared in my IG highlights @Charelle_barbelle.
Since March, I have built a platform, ordered a set of affordable plates, joined an online team, and most importantly found a way to continue getting better at the sport I love. This GoFundMe is a continuation of my effort and commitment to keep training safely through this winter and pandemic. A shed provides a sheltered space where I can lift without worrying about injury associated with an icy, wet, or warped platform. I've spent quite a bit of time researching and comparing various shed options. After realizing most pre- fabricated sheds are too short for performing overhead movements, I have decided to build a shed with the assistance of my older brother. Building a shed from scratch is about half of the cost of purchasing a pre-made shed with height accommodations for overhead work. I’ve created an excel sheet calculating costs for a 12x16’ shed. You can find a screenshot of preliminary costs on this GoFundMe.
Finally, I am hoping to compete at the New Mexico Weightlifting Championships in New Mexico and hope to use this meet as an opportunity to qualify for my first national meet at the North American Open next spring.
This sport has saved me in more ways than one this year. Please donate to and share this GoFundMe. Thank you!
