One in every six children will suffer from a mental health disorder by the age of 12, one in twenty people diagnosed with a mental health disorder will attempt suicide every year. 210 billion pounds is spent on depression alone annually. My Charity Flight may not put a stop to this… but its about time we came together and started to fight back.
Hi my name is Lyle Weir, I am a 24 year old Pilot undertaking the challenge of Flying around the United Kingdom plus Channel Islands on September 1st 2022 in an attempt raise awareness and money for Mental Health. A Charity Flight that will spread a strong, positive and uplifting message.
Mental Health has effected everyone at some stage in their lives including me yet I believe it is still a very misunderstood, underestimated and dangerous killer that is hardly spoken about.
I am planning to take a single engine aircraft, Piper Arrow, all around the outskirts of the UK and to the Channel Islands, landing at multiple stops from the furthest points south, all the way to the high north, spreading awareness and covering the many illnesses and disorders that are classified and recognised under Mental Health during my time at these different places.
Why is this so important to me? I have suffered my own personal battles with mental health due to the loss of close family which led me to a very low and dark time of my life that I kept quiet and to myself for a long time. Along with my own battles, some people in my life that mean the most to me have suffered badly with mental health leaving me to feel helpless and unsure of what to do or say. Worst of all I have lost close friends who have had to battle with mental health and sadly chose to take their own life due to it. I know everyone reading this has their own stories and experiences with it all, the time is now that we come together and start doing something about it. This Charity Flight won’t cure everyone and make the illness disappear. But if it gets people talking, opening up and realising they are not on their own then that to me is success!
The target goal I have set myself is very high and this is because I plan to give the donated funds I raise to the Mental Health charity 'The Mix'. A charity who’s work and dedication spoke for itself and it will be an honour to raise money for such a hard working charity and know it will all be put to great use. I plan to smash this fundraiser target and be part of one of the biggest mental health fundraisers that has happened. I would also like to say a big thank you to all the businesses/ companies that are sponsoring the flight. Really appreciate everyone getting behind me and supporting this campaign. This Charity flight wouldn't of been able to happen without you.
Michael Thelwall, Head of Fundraising at The Mix, said “We’re delighted that Lyle is taking to the skies to raise money for vital mental health services for young people. By fundraising for the UK’s leading digital support service for under 25s, Lyle’s Charity Flight will help to support our life-saving services, so The Mix is always there for young people when they need us the most - via our website, over the phone or on social media.”
