After 45 years of incarceration, Berry is finally coming home!

At 21 years old, in 1978, Berry was sentenced to a virtual life sentence. After being subjected to NYSDOCCS for over four decades, Berry has survived. During his incarceration, Berry impacted all of those around him in tremendous ways. In the 1990s, Berry helped create the Caribbean and African Unity program that is now throughout all of DOCCS. In the 2000s, Berry built the children's visiting room in Greenhaven Correctional Facility. In 2020, despite being immunocompromised from surviving cancer, Berry volunteered to help develop specialized sanitation measures at Fishkill Correctional Facility during the COVID-19 pandemic to stop the spread.

Berry is a respected elder and mentor to the men he has met throughout his incarceration. During his incarceration, he has continued to be a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and son to his family in NYC and in Jamaica. Now, at age 67 years old, Berry is finally coming home. Upon release, Berry will be deported to Jamaica.

Over the past year, we have come to know Berry's character through our work together. His values and care are demonstrated by his empathy to those around him. It is rare to see and know someone like Berry, who has spent his entire incarceration dedicated to rehabilitating himself and uplifting the community around him, both inside and outside of prison.
