Welcome Home Justina After 10 Years
Donation protected
Our dear friend and comrade Justina recently returned from 10 years in federal prison and is now on home confinement until September 2024. Since meeting and corresponding with her seven years ago through our work with prisoners at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, we have come to appreciate Justina as a kind and thoughtful advocate who will make important contributions to movements for justice. Now, we want to provide her the safety and support she deserves as she begins her new life in New York City as a trans woman and, for the first time, as an adult.
Returning home from incarceration is always a challenge: one has to obtain IDs, write resumes, find a job and a place to live, and adjust to new professional and community settings all at once. Justina is already making big strides as she attends transitional programs at John Jay College and internships at Housing Works and New York Common Pantry. Her goal right now is to enroll in college and pursue a degree in social work, to assist and advocate for other formerly incarcerated people as they return home.
All donations to the Welcome Home Fund will go directly to Justina, and every amount, no matter how small, will make a difference. Your donation will help to cover:
- Groceries
- Phone bills
- Casual and work clothes for all seasons
- Transportation costs
- Unexpected expenses that crop up
Please contribute if you are able, and share widely and help us reach our goal!
