Welcome to Jaffa - (animation and projection)
Donation protected
Raising money for the completion of a motion graphics animation and related equipment rental fees for a projection mapping to my mural titled Welcome To Jaffa, in Cincinnati OH, during an event called BLINK which takes place on October 13-16.
This project aims to highlight and educate others on the plight of the Palestinian people and help to provide an accurate historical context and perspective to the conflict, which regrettably still consumes the land which we call home.
As I was brainstorming ideas and searching for inspiration of what to paint the mural of, I remembered the tales that my father, Khaled, would tell me about his childhood and the vast orange groves in Palestine that my family owned before the Nakba.
My father would tell me of the sweet scent of the orange blossoms wafting through their countryside home, and also how my grandfather, Yacoub, would toss coins into the groves to keep my father and his 10 brothers and sisters distracted and searching for the coins while my grandfather would try to get some work done.
These childhood stories of my father, his siblings and the vast orange groves my family once owned were always a common and uniting element of my family as they became uprooted and scattered about the world in the Palestinian diaspora.
So I settled on painting a mural of the famed Jaffa oranges of my families groves in Wadi Hunein, and named the work, “Welcome to Jaffa” after the port city of Jaffa, where the oranges were exported.
I will be working on a motion graphics animation to bring the mural to life during BLINK and will be projecting the names of the children killed in Gaza onto the building, as well as the names of all of the cities and towns throughout Palestine which were depopulated during the Nakba. I will also be honoring the life and work of Shireen Abu Akleh through this animation work.
I would also like to use the project as a means to thank Roger Waters of Pink Floyd for all of his support to the Palestinian community over the years. I had the pleasure of meeting with Roger during his visit to Cincinnati, and I was honored to give him my Keffiyeh, which he later wore on stage that night during his performance.
Funds will be used for expenses related to equipment rental, time, labor, logistics and consultation of technical details related to the execution of the project.
$7,000 - estimated cost for projector for 6 days.
$4,000 - requested compensation for motion graphics animation and project management (approx. 160hrs of work, at $25/hr)
$5,000 - $9,000 - flex budget for other equipment rental, lighting, speakers, logistics, printing, and unknown expenses, and labor if other helping hands are needed.
All donors will receive a detailed expense report after the completion of the project, and any unused funds can either be returned to donors (pro rata) or will be passed to organizations such as Jewish Voice for Peace, Institute for Middle East Understanding, or Palestine Children's Relief Fund.
The mural is located near Findlay Market, at the corner of E. Clifton & Frintz st.
