Who we are
Hackney School of Food (HSoF) is a vibrant community-centred food education hub in East London. As a not-for-profit*, our mission is to improve the health and well-being of children, families and our community by sharing the knowledge, opportunities and skills to grow and cook delicious, sustainable and culturally diverse food from scratch.
Why We Need Your Help:
We’re so close to making something truly special happen.
We are raising funds to transform a disused building on our grounds into a vibrant new Garden Room.
This warm and welcoming space will bring our community together to learn about food growing, and caring for nature.
Directly connected to our garden, the Garden Room will host workshops, shared meals, and events where people can gain practical skills, and connect to each other.
The groundwork has been laid, and with your support, we can open the Garden Room in March 2025!
There'll be a whole new programme of events and workshops to get stuck into - so come along on the journey!
What your support will do
We’ve secured a whopping £95,000 for converting the garden room, but we need your help to raise the final £15,000 to make our Garden Room a reality!
Your donation will help us to complete the building by buying the following essentials:
Furniture: Chairs and tables for workshops and shared meals.
Teaching & Tech Equipment: Tools for helping us learn and knowledge share.
Crockery & decorations: To make the space feel inviting and accessible to all.
Water connection: Essential for serving drinks, washing up, and hosting meals.
More than just bricks and mortar, your support will help us ensure that everyone can experience the joy of growing, cooking, and sharing healthy, seasonal food.
Why this is important
We want to help our community access fresh, healthy food and green spaces by tackling the following:
Limited green space: Three-quarters of Hackney residents lack a garden, while essential food-growing skills are being lost.
Diet-related health issues: 40% of children in year six are living with obesity, making access to healthy food and physical activities critical.
Food poverty: We are located in an area where 60% of local families are eligible for Free School Meals - well above the national average.
Our new Garden Room will address these issues head-on, providing practical knowledge in cooking and food growing that give our community the tools to live healthier lives.
How you can help
Every donation, big or small, makes a BIG difference whether its £10 or £100.
- a £10 donation will help us buy 3 plates, for community meals and gatherings, where we'll share food together.
- a £100 donation buys chairs for the Garden Room, where children and adults will sit as they learn and grow.
- a £500 donation helps us buy tables, creating a space for learning, sharing and eating together.
To show our gratitude, we’re offering special rewards for larger contributions:
- Donations over £50 will receive 10% off and priority booking for our new food growing workshops launching Spring 2025.
- Donations over £500 will be offered a free cooking class at HSoF for up to 10 people and invited to our Garden Room launch event.
