Too young for a mammogram, but not too young for breast cancer.

My name is Jamie Symonette. I am from Nassau, Bahamas. I am a proud alum of St. Augustine’s College, the College of Saint Benedict, and St Cloud State University. I currently work as a part-time professor at the University of the Bahamas.

In March of this year while getting dressed, I noticed an unusual firmness in my right breast. Out of caution, I decided to go to my doctor to check it out. The doctor did a breast examination and referred me for an ultrasound. At 34 years old, she told me that I was too young for a mammogram. After the ultrasound, I was immediately informed that I needed to have a mammogram done. The mammogram result was unfavorable as it showed that there were two lumps in my right breast. The next day I did a biopsy to find out if the lumps were benign or not. My worst fears were confirmed. I was diagnosed with breast cancer!

As the tears streamed down my face I tried to come to grips with my new reality. At 34 years old, I have Stage 3 breast cancer. I questioned why this deadly illness would befall me.

As fate would have it, I was too young for a mammogram, but not too young for breast cancer. Cancer does not run in my family. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anybody. This is why it is so important to get tested.

I am now in the fight for my life. I have no health insurance and am leaning on faith. Faith that my cancer treatment will be successful. Faith that I can be cancer free. Faith that I can raise enough financial donations for my medical fund. And faith that God has a bigger plan for my life.
