WEST-CORK NARROW-GAUGE RAILWAY!!

Donation protected
WE'RE BUILDING A RAILWAY HERE IN WEST CORK – because railways are brilliant!
They make it easy to move heavy loads over long distances.
They take up very little space and cost much less to build than a road.
They are incredibly efficient.
And they are great fun too.

This is not a model railway – we’re talking about a truly useful working railway on our small farm. We have already developed a really cheap and simple way to build track using readily available materials, and we’ve proved it works. So now we want to extend the railway and make the LONGEST RAILWAY IN WEST CORK!

This railway will connect the Hairy Henry Therapeutic Riding Barn with the garlic beds where we grow our fabulous Elephant Garlic. That way we can move the muck heap from where it’s made to where it’s needed.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL – this railway will demonstrate how easy, how useful, and how cost-effective narrow-gauge trains can be. Not just on farms, but in forestry, nurseries and workshops. Even in schools. And, of course, potentially for moving people between villages and towns. We hope to inspire people and communities everywhere to build their own light railways, so we will hold open-days for visitors young and old. Help us build this railway, see it in action, and then go and build your own!

Details – the railway is 15” gauge, approximately 200 meters long at the moment. The aim is to extend it to 500 meters long, with junctions and platforms along the way. We already have various wagons and a compressed-air locomotive running on it, but when it’s finished, other locos and rolling stock will be built too. We would like to have passengers riding on it, but insurance might make that impossible – but we’ll try! Either way we’ll still have open days and workshops where people will be able to experience the magic of working railways.

The materials are very cheap – but we need a lot of them. That’s why we’re asking for your help. Please drop a few euro in the pot – or even volunteer for a few hours and build a few feet of track. Together we can make this happen – the longest working railway for miles and miles and miles!
