West Islip Public Library Eagle Scout Project

The West Islip Public Library is more than books, it brings our community together!  Scouting has taught me about how involvement can make a positive difference in our community, nation and world. The founder of the Boy Scouts, Lord Baden Powell, once said: “But the real way to get happiness is giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it”.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Nicholas Scarmozzino. I am a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 95 in West Islip, NY.  My Eagle Scout Project is to fundraise and install a community bench and coloring table at The West Islip Public Library.

The West Islip Public Library has been an important part of my life and makes a positive difference every day to those who use it.  A place where parents and neighbors come together, while children learn how to read, acquire new skills and socialize. The librarians are always kind, welcoming and provide a wide range of worthwhile educational programs. Even during this pandemic, they continue to offer amazing programs online. I would like to give back to  them by installing a community bench and new coloring table in the children’s department. I hope you can help me make this project a success.

My original fundraiser was a FunDrive clothing donation which was scheduled on March 28th but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was postponed multiple times and unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of our times, had to be cancelled.

Meanwhile, this Eagle Scout project has become more meaningful during this difficult time. As I have witnessed the bravery of the front line workers and personally experienced the pain of the lives lost due to COVID-19 virus, which sadly included my Grandpa, I am grateful this community bench will not only serve our community but will be dedicated to the COVID-19 victims and the front line workers.

West Islip is a strong community.  May this bench remind us of how we united and persevered together through this crisis.   Thank you for your consideration. Your donation in any amount is greatly appreciated.  Be well and safe.
