BEIRUT EMERGENCY RELIEF
Donation protected
Update: Campaign closed on September 22nd. Many thanks to everybody that has helped us and contributed to our campaign.
Dear Wharton Family,
As many of you know by now, Beirut, the capital city of Lebanon, is suffering from a devastating explosion that left more than 157 dead, over 5,000 injured and an estimated 300,000 homeless.
Beirut’s heavily populated city center is completely covered in dust and debris, and miles away from Beirut’port, where the site of the explosion was, windows have shattered and buildings were knocked down, leaving many people with no to limited shelter. This has come at an extremely sensitive time for Lebanon - over the last year, Lebanon has been tiptoeing on the brink of an economic collapse after years of mismanagement. The country’s currency lost nearly 85-90% of its value, throwing many into unemployment and poverty. All this comes with the pandemic in the shadows.
To our WG'21 and WG'22 classmates, we are saddened to have put the Lebanon trek on hold, however we do hope to have better days next year to execute on our promise: show you around our beautiful country and continue the Lebanon Trek legacy.
To all Wharton alums, who got to visit our charming capital on one of the many Lebanon treks- Beirut misses you and needs you.
Our goal is to channel donations to accredited NGOs back home. Any contribution will be much appreciated and will come to the support of people in need: As little as USD 50 can feed an affected family for 14 days.
Donations will go to:
- Lebanese Red Cross : On-ground medical emergency services
- Lebanese Food Bank Association : Food supplies to displaced families
- Donner Sang Compter : Blood donations and on-ground crisis relief
- Beit El Baraka : Comprehensive support for families, including fixing damaged homes, food distributions, and medical coverage
- Offre Joie : Volunteer movement to rebuild homes and clean up debris
We thank you all for your generosity!
With love from the current Lebanese Wharton students, Chris, Daniel, Galia, Joe, Liliane, Natalie, Tracy, and Yara
Feel free to reach out to any of the organizers for additional clarifications or potential collaborations.
