James' Wheelchair Accessible FamVan
We are the Leclair-Henricks family and these wheels are our way of transportation! We are a young, hardworking family who love going on a ton of adventures; splash pads, skate parks, zoos, CNE, etc. We also go to doctors’ appointments with each other, we visit family and run errands with our family van. James is my step son who is 7-year-old boy and we have him full time. He is an amazing young man who was born with cerebral palsy and is deaf without his cochlear implants (he doesn't speak and he uses communication devices, with some signing, to talk with us). He currently has a manual wheelchair and is working towards getting a powered wheelchair! Sariah is his little sister who just turned 6 months and they love each other a bunch, it’s adorable to watch their connection.
Currently we have a family dodge caravan that James sits in a car seat for, which he is growing out of. Dad puts his wheelchair in the back, which will be impossible with the new power wheelchair. So we contacted some mobility agents, they’ve checked out our car and explained it’s too old for the modifications and we need to get a new van with the modifications built in; our quotes were just around 55,000 or 45,000. This van will not only have the wheelchair spot for James, his sister can sit next to him and we have the passenger seat and rear seating. Currently there is funding to receive mobility vans that we are applying to, these funds do come with expiree dates and I will post them as they are received. There is March of Dimes (maximum funding is 15,000), Presidents Choice charity (maximum of 20,000) and Easter Seals (maximum of 3,000) for a nice total of 38,000. We will be able to add 3,000 of our own savings and need this extra 4,000 to seal the deal!! We have been approved for the next stage of funding with March of Dimes (which is the hardest charity to get approved for!) We will apply for Presidents Choice and Easter Seals very shortly but they come with expiry dates. I will keep you all posted on our charity applications and James’ progress.
