Due to hurricane Barry and rain in the New Orleans area, my wheelchair van got flooded on Wednesday, July 10. I am a C7 quadriplegic as of 2002. It was a harrowing experience where I got rescued by fire fighters who put me on a spine board on a high water rescue track and transported me to a hospital where I was due for a medical procedure. My van is functional mechanically except all of the features that I need including the wheelchair ramp and the wheelchair door do not work. So it is not usable by me as of now. I am also having to wait an additional five days for the insurance inspection.
I’m raising money for the deductible and pre-ordering parts that my insurance will not cover. Without my wheelchair van I am literally stuck at home. I cannot Uber, I cannot rent a vehicle that I can drive for less than $110 a day, I can’t catch a ride with a friend. My paratransit services have Also been suspended so I am without my back up system. If you can help in anyway, you would have my utmost gratitude.
New Orleans did not get a lot of rain but I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and as of now my transportation needs are an emergency.
