Help Shawn navigate life with ALS
Donation protected
In late 2022, Shawn's life took an unexpected turn when he noticed a loss of dexterity in his hands and trouble with his balance. Little did he know that these seemingly minor issues would lead to a life-changing diagnosis. After a series of doctor's appointments and even reconstructive surgery on his left ankle, Shawn was referred to the renowned Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. In August 2023, he received the news that would reshape his world: he had ALS.
Despite the challenges that came with his diagnosis, Shawn's spirit remained unbroken. Over the next year and a half, he and his family found creative ways to adjust their routines, adapting to the changes in Shawn's body with determination and grace. Even as his mobility decreased, Shawn's resolve grew stronger.
A Family United
Shawn and his wife, Amy have faced this journey together with unwavering support for each other. Their love and commitment shine through as they navigate the complexities of ALS, making regular trips from their home in Madison, Mississippi to Jacksonville, Florida for specialized care at the Mayo Clinic. In addition to Amy, Shawn is surrounded by the love of his children (Carter, Ceatan and Alex), mother, father, sisters and extended family, who provide steadfast emotional support and encouragement.
Overcoming Obstacles
The couple has encountered numerous hurdles, including multiple denials from their insurance company for a much-needed power wheelchair. Despite these setbacks, they've remained positive and proactive, paying out of pocket for essential adaptive equipment to improve Shawn's quality of life.
The Power of Community
Now, Shawn and Amy are reaching out to their community for support. They need help to cover the costs of a power wheelchair ($21,041), a wheelchair-accessible van, and necessary home modifications. These tools are not just equipment; they're the key to Shawn's independence and comfort.
Shawn's Resilience
Through it all, Shawn has maintained his career in IT Security, working from home and continuing to contribute his expertise. His ability to adapt and persevere in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. Unfortunately, Shawn's job will end by the end of this year, adding further financial strain
