WHEELS HS STUDENTS VISIT CUBA!
Donation protected
April 22 to 28, 2016:
9 students from the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) in New York City will visit Havana, Cuba for 7 days to learn about Cuba from the Cuban people themselves. Designed and planned by students in our Critical Theory and Social Justice Club, the trip will focus on hearing from Cuban voices about the country's history, day-to-day life in Cuba, developing relations with the United States and learning about Afro-Cuban communities and culture. We will do this by visiting museums, cultural sites and universities, and meeting with local historians, educators, business people and students. We are one of the first high school groups from the United States - and the first public school group - to visit Cuba since the recent easing of travel restrictions.
Our trip departure date is quickly approaching and there is still a gap between the total cost of the trip ($12,900) and the $9,125 we have fundraised through an open mic at WHEELS, family contributions and a significant donation from a community member. We're almost there(!) and we are calling on you - our friends, families and community - to help us reach our fundraising goal of $3,775.
Your donations will help make this once in a lifetime experience - at this historic moment - a reality for our students. It is one that will undoubtedly resonate for years to come. We are grateful for your support and look forward to sharing our pictures and experiences with you when we return! Please share this link with your networks to spread this as far and wide as possible.
Sincerely,
Daniel and the WHEELS Critical Theory and Social Justice Club
