Camp Ray of Hope, Romania

Hi! We're Ashlyn and Kaitlin, a couple of old friends from high school who decided to quit our jobs, see a bit of the world, and hopefully do something good for it while we're at it.

We're setting out on May 11th to bicycle from the Atlantic Coast of France to the Black Sea in Romania, a distance of nearly 3,000 miles, to raise awareness and funds to benefit chronically ill children in Romania. Our trip supports S.T.A.R. Children Relief’s Camp Ray of Hope, a summer program that provides children who have rare blood diseases and cancer with the opportunity to have a worry-free summer camp experience.

Our trip will take us through France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and Serbia before we embark on the final leg of our journey through the rugged interior of Romania. We aim to arrive at Camp Ray of Hope in late July to meet the children, medical professionals, and nonprofit staff in the final days of camp this summer.

Camp Ray of Hope is dedicated to providing a life changing camping experience to children suffering from a serious illness. Our purpose is to enrich their lives by creating memorable and fun adventures that are empowering and exciting. At Camp Ray of Hope, children are free to explore, create, and thrive and recognize that the time spent together making friends is the greatest luxury.

Located in Romania, Camp Ray of Hope offers children living with hemophilia, cancer and other serious illnesses something they don’t get to have every day – a chance to experience what it is to be a child. These children enjoy the camaraderie of new friends they relate to. They share activities with these friends while learning more about their own condition, how to treat it and how to cope with it. These activities were once a dream for these children, but now become a reality as they are assisted by a caring and attentive staff from around the world.

Camp Ray of Hope is free to all qualified children.

Our bicycle trip is fully self-supported and self-funded. Any money we raise on our bike ride will go directly to the camp. The ultimate goal is to raise enough money to bring a small group of terminally ill children to Disneyland, Paris. Any and all donations are helpful, and even if you can’t donate, getting the word out is great, too! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
