Whirlwind Johnson Foundation: Save Tennis History
The Whirlwind Johnson Foundation was established in 2015 to oversee the restoration and preservation of the home, tennis court, shed and legacy of Dr. Robert Walter Johnson. Dr. Johnson and his son Robert Walter Johnson Jr. were instrumental in breaking the color barriers in the sport of tennis, by launching the careers of both Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe from their home and backyard tennis court in Lynchburg, VA.
Not only were they responsible for the first two African Americans winning a major singles tennis championship, they shared this effort with more than 200 others who participated in the Johnson American Tennis Association Junior Development Program.
