Whiskeys' Wonky Legs
Thanks for visiting Whiskeys page ❤️
I'm Sam, Whiskeys owner. I adopted Whiskey in October 2023 after he had been surrendered to a rescue. He is a 5 year old Springer Spaniel in the prime of his life and is the happiest boy who loves doing all spaniel things such as puddle diving and ditch jumping. He has brought so much love and joy to not only my life but to everyone who meets him.
Whiskey has a wonky left leg from a previous break that was never treated properly. He walks with a profound limp and has limited use of his left leg. He is affectionately known as "wonk" (or Wonker when he is being cheeky ).
After I adopted him, he had a health check at the vets and they were not happy with the look of the leg.
Whiskey had x-rays which confirmed the leg is in a far worse state than previously thought, and it was found he had also had a previous break in his right leg too! I dont know how these breaks occurred and can't begin to imagine what he went through.
Whiskeys left leg is in a bad way, with his Humerus and Radius completely misaligned. It's called a malunion of the fracture where it has healed abnormally. Even though he doesnt show it, it is likely Whiskey is in extreme pain from this and he has now been started on pain killers.
He has been referred to a specialist and there was talk of amputation but because of the previous break in the right leg, it is likely Whiskey would not cope with this.
The specialist would like to do a surgery called Arthrodesis where they fuse the joints together. Without this surgery it is believed Whiskey will suffer greatly and ultimately the leg and Whiskey will deteriorate. The surgery will stop alot of pain and hopefully help prevent further problems as Whiskey gets older, allowing him to continue being the crazy springer that he is.
The estimated cost of the surgery is £5,500 - £6,000 and then there will be physio, pain medications etc as well. The rescue Whiskey was adopted from have said they can not help. Whiskey is insured but as this is pre-exisiting it is not covered.
Whiskey and I thank you for any and all support you can offer and I'm hoping with surgery he can live a relatively pain free, wonky life and continue to do all the things he loves.
