White Folk: Let's Abolish White Supremacy Together
Donation protected
Since 2020, power and wealth have largely stayed in the same hands. Both the majority-white conservative and liberal media have doubled down on vehement anti-Black racism, anti-queer and anti-trans violence, and a complete cognitive dissonance around the vicious impacts of unfettered capitalism. The country is looking down the barrel at daily mass shootings, skyrocketing homelessness, and an increasingly sneering and cruel class of wealthy white corporate and political leaders, embattled by a geriatric class of liberal leadership that hold on to racist ideas of altruism and ‘color blindness’. Why didn’t white peoples’ 2020 ‘racial reckoning’ work?
White supremacy is a much deeper, psychological problem than we acknowledged in 2020.
We are seeking donations to build and scale Better Elders, an effort to transform and radicalize white people en masse towards abolition, through radical, nurturing and accountable communities of white people taking care of one another through the painful process of deconstructing internalized white supremacy, and coming out the other side as poverty and prison abolitionists in action, ready to pull in more white people into the deprogramming process all around the United States.
Better Elders is:
- a community of accountability practice for white people as well as
- a media and culture organization moving the Overton window to the left by normalizing abolition as a central political and personal value system for white communities.
WHY YOUR DONATION IS CRITICAL:
It often takes up to a year (or more) for an organization to receive its first foundational grant—which is why the Better Elders team, advisory board, and board of directors have all committed ourselves to using our own resources to develop ‘initial operating capabilities’ and are asking you to help cover our bare-bones startup operating costs.
We are relying on passionate friends, neighbors and frustrated white people who are committed to the destruction of white supremacy and all of its harmful siblings. Your support makes all the impact.
This work cannot wait; with your support, we can spend the next year experimenting with our first cohort, producing national-level, culture-shifting media and—most importantly—starting the work of deprogramming white people en masse, educating white people on the fallacy of ‘white identity’ and then taking accountable action in our neighborhoods, in our politics and in our culture.
HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU DONATE?
Part of Better Elders’ goal is to support liberal white people to become more honest about their wealth, class and privilege. Check out Resource Generation, an org that helps people assess how much wealth they should redistribute.
- If you want to donate, but can’t commit to a large amount (maybe you’re in the first generation in your family to go to college, maybe you are taking care of a family member, etc.) consider donating $5-$100.
- If you are comfortable financially (you work in the private or tech sector), consider donating $500-$1,000.
- If you own two or more properties, consider donating $2,000-$5,000.
- If you are wealthy, come from generational wealth, or generate income from investments, consider donating $5,000 to $10,000 or more.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION and for experimenting with parting with your wealth, however much you give. Building this movement is a dream come true made possible with your contributions. Welcome to Better Elders!
INTRO TO THE FOUNDER:
Hello! I am the founder of Better Elders, embedded deeply in community and held accountable by neighbors and organizers in Crown Heights, New York. My name is Olivia Snarski; I am ex-nonprofit industrial complex, ex-government, ex-tech, and critically aware of white savior complexes.
My goal is to midwife white people away of their whiteness and into their authentic, and deep identities absent of white supremacy, capitalism, and incarceration as a default state. I believe that this will leave white people committed to the abolition of poverty, police and prisons.
For the last decade, I have worked across the spectrum of government, nonprofits and tech. Much of my work focused on democracy, voting rights and homelessness. I have spent the last three years working on the ground with labor unions, mutual aid organizations and tenant organizers to begin to experiment with a framework for how white people must change and grow in order to be participants in the fight for liberation and abundance.
