Whitney's Dental Care Campaign

Our amazing friend Whitney needs our help!

Hello, everyone! My name’s Corinne Hutchinson. I’m one of Whitney’s best friends and primary caretakers. I’m organizing a GoFundMe treatment fundraiser for her. As many of you know, Whitney’s health has been declining rapidly over the last several years. As a result of her complicated and rare medical issues, she’s in need of urgent dental work that is estimated to cost over $20,000.

To give a bit of background, when Whitney was four, she was diagnosed with one of the worst cases of pancreatitis in the world. To save her life, her pancreas was completely removed, a surgery that some doctors doubted was possible.

As part of the surgery, a finite number of insulin-producing cells were transplanted from her pancreas to her liver. As these cells die over time due to stress, her diabetes becomes less and less manageable, making her increasingly susceptible to illness and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening metabolic state requiring immediate hospitalization. Most diabetics might suffer from DKA once in their lifetime, while Whitney has gone into DKA over 40 times.

In 2018, Whitney went into a coma as a result of DKA, and we nearly lost her. I watched first-hand as doctors struggled to keep her alive. We didn’t know if she would make it, and we were unsure how her body would be further affected if she did wake up. After nearly a week, she did come out of her coma and has done her best to maintain her health ever since.

While she deals with these severe medical issues and their effects daily, the most pressing concern she’s now facing is her need for dental work. Doctors speculate that the dental issues caused by her failing health are in turn making those same health issues worse. It’s an overwhelming cycle that shows the importance of balance through her entire body for better, more stabilized health.

When Whitney woke up from her coma, a couple of problem teeth went from OK to needing root canals. The dental work she needs has grown exponentially since then as her health has continued to decline. Along with multiple root canals and many cavities, she now needs 3 extractions. It will be necessary to get implants so that she can maintain a diet that supports an appropriate diabetic diet and weight, both of which are constantly challenged.

Whitney has been attempting to have dental work done for years, but there have been many factors that delay the process, mostly beyond her control. These factors include poor health, hospitalizations, and lack of funds. She’s even had doctors decide that her case is too complicated and send her away. She’s been forced to find new dentists multiple times.

At last, she’s found an office who will treat her! She’s participating in the discounted program, but the amount of money she’ll need to pay is far beyond what she can handle. Her financial stability is rockier with COVID. Because she’s at high risk, she’s not permitted to venture out, which means she’s currently unable to work.

While Whitney hates having to ask for help, I’ve urged her to let me start this GoFundMe, as we’re both seeing just how dire the situation is. Even if you can’t contribute monetarily, please consider sharing this page with others. With our help, Whitney can get the care she needs and be on her way to more stabilized health!
