Wicklund Family - Isaac's Medical Expenses
Donation protected
Hello! We are raising funds to support medical expenses for my sweet little brother, Isaac, who was admitted to the hospital last month and, though home now, continues to be under care of doctors. Here is a brief backstory, as well as an update from our mom, Kara, below:
Isaac has struggled his entire life with an autoinflammatory disease called Cryopyrin Associated Periodic Syndrome (CAPS). CAPS is caused by a genetic mutation which, on its own, can become life-threatening at times. Isaac has also struggled with symptoms separate from CAPS and has recently been diagnosed with a neuromuscular junction disease with features of Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Myasthenia can also be life-threatening.
Having a diagnosis and path to helpful treatments is a positive step forward. However, as most of you following Isaac's journey might know, he was recently hospitalized for a Myasthenic Crisis, resulting in respiratory failure. He has many specialists caring for him who plan to provide continuing care through recovery. Isaac has a long road ahead of him; as his journey continues, please pray for continued strength and healing.
UPDATE 8/1/22: “To access the treatment he needs, Isaac will have to travel with some regularity to CA to see his team at UCSF. Our next trip out is on August 19th, and we're hoping to be back in time for Isaac to start 9th grade in person.
Isaac will need to remain stable until we get to CA for us to stick with this plan. We were optimistic about it because he seemed to be doing well. However, in the past couple of days, he appears to be declining again... and as of yesterday, his breathing seems difficult again. It's not as difficult as it was before he was admitted last time, but I'm not loving the trend we're seeing. It's possible the treatment he received in the hospital wasn't quite enough and that it's wearing off sooner than we had hoped.
If he continues to struggle, we may decide to head to CA sooner than planned so that he's able to get the treatment he needs right away. We're incredibly thankful for the UMN Masonic PICU team -- but we'd love to avoid the ventilator.
Thank you so much for your prayers! Please continue praying that he remains stable until we can get him to CA, and that logistics for all of the travel ahead work out smoothly.”
