WILDFIRE: Support the Arts and Bushfire Relief

Donation protected
Co-Curators Megan C. Austin and Ashlie Flood will exhibit Jon Bellona’s WILDFIRE at the SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York City, which will be open from March 3rd – March 9th, 2020. We’ve launched this GoFundMe in conjunction with the exhibition to cover our administrative costs and to raise money for two charities whose work is thematically aligned with this exhibition: the Australian Red Cross and Integrated Arts.

Our funding breakdown is as follows:

Until we meet our goal, 50% of your donation will cover our administrative costs, and then we will send 25% to Integrated Arts (the non-profit arm of Harmonic Laboratory), and 25% to the Australian Red Cross. Once we meet our goal, donations will be split 50/50 between the Australian Red Cross and Integrated Arts.

If you’re interested in making a gift that is 100% tax deductible, in lieu of donating through GoFundMe, please email [email redacted] .

Please read on to learn more about WILDFIRE, the Australian Red Cross, Integrated Arts and Harmonic Laboratory, and to see just how all of these pieces came together for our exhibition at this year’s SPRING/BREAK Art Show.

ABOUT WILDFIRE

WILDFIRE is a sound art installation that recreates the crackling rush of fire across an array of 16 speakers at the documented speed of actual California wildfires. WILDFIRE transports the visitor to the site of each disaster, forcing them to viscerally unpack the effect of these wildfires on our terrain, and the larger effect of humans on the environment. In keeping with this year’s Spring Break Art Show theme “IN EXCESS,” WILDFIRE confronts us with the reality of what happens when our excessive consumption of natural resources goes unchecked.

Jon Bellona originally created WILDFIRE as a response to the devastating horrors of the California wildfires, but the sound of the work resonates far beyond the US. Climate change is a global crisis, and if nothing is done, wildfires will continue to rage hotter and longer in California, Australia, and all across the globe.

GIVING TO AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRE RELIEF

Back in November, as we began to compile materials for the SPRING/BREAK Art Show application, news of Australia’s bushfires was just beginning to make its way into American mainstream media. In the following weeks, we watched in horror as the fires destroyed over 27.2 million acres  and killed an estimated 1 billion animals and at least 33 people.

Recently, cooler temperatures and rainstorms have helped emergency responders to get the remaining fires under control, and the media have packed their bags and moved on to greener pastures. But Australia must now turn its sights towards relief and recovery. It will take years to recover from these wildfires, which have caused an estimated $3-3.5 billion in damage.

Therefore, we decided to donate 25% of the proceeds from our WILDFIRE fundraiser to The Australian Red Cross. They've received over $140 million in donations so far, and recently released a comprehensive bushfire and disaster recovery plan  that details how funds will be used, which includes $61 million allocated to help those affected by the fires to meet their immediate needs.

FUNDING FUTURE PERFORMANCE AND INSTALLATION ARTWORKS

Integrated Arts is a Eugene, Oregon-based non-profit committed to developing projects for community enrichment through performance and installation arts. Since July 2014, Integrated Arts has operated as the non-profit arm of Harmonic Laboratory.

Harmonic Laboratory  is a collective of artists, thinkers, educators and innovators that investigate the human experience through integrated media. Their mission is to inspire ideas and community through arts and technology collaborations. Jon Bellona is co-director of Harmonic Laboratory and the secretary for Integrated Arts.

To support future works of art produced by Jon and his colleagues at Harmonic Laboratory, we will donate 25% of the proceeds from this fundraiser to Integrated Arts. WILDFIRE is one of many impactful works of art that have come from Harmonic Laboratory, and we are excited to see what the collective will create in the future.

COVERING ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS

As a Special Project for the SPRING/BREAK Art Show, there is a $2,500 exhibition fee, $500 security deposit, and $100 card processing fee attached directly to our exhibition. Administrative costs will also include artist and preparator travel and accommodation, installation supplies, supplemental A/V equipment, and stipends for our preparators, docents, and staff. Though we are not paid for this exhibition, we believe it is just and equitable to pay all of those who have made this exhibition a possibility.

ABOUT THE SPRING/BREAK ART SHOW

The SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical and historic New York City exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week. Low-cost exhibition space and low-cost entry for art patrons, public, and practitioners alike aims to widen the arts audience in New York and broaden the dialog of what constitutes value and economy in a 21st Century city. The 9th Annual New York City exhibition will be held from March 3rd  – March 9th, 2020, and the theme for this year’s show is ‘IN EXCESS.’

To learn more about this year’s SPRING/BREAK Art Show, please read this Artnews article  and follow the show on Instagram at @springbreakartshow . You can buy timed-entry tickets to the SPRING/BREAK Art Show here.  Megan and/or Ashlie will be there for the duration of the show. We hope to see you there!

If you have any questions or would like more details about the exhibition, please email [email redacted] .
