Support our Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and Save Opossums

Smoky Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation is a small, home-based wildlife rescue organization. We are a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt charity with a current staff of one individual.

Since becoming involved with the wildlife rehab community in North Carolina, I have found that the majority of rehabilitation centers are small, home-based organizations such as mine. Many facilities are located in relatively remote locations with little access to affordable veterinary care. As a veterinarian, I am in a unique position to provide low-cost medical care to animals who are brought to my facility, but other rehabbers aren't so lucky.

That’s me, Dr. Cynthia Post, wildlife rehabber and veterinarian. In addition to caring for wildlife at my own facility, I would love to be able to help other rehabbers so they can rehabilitate more animals at a more reasonable price.

To that end, I am working on setting up a small veterinary hospital where rehabbers can bring injured and orphaned wild animals for procedures such as X-rays, surgery, and hospitalization.

Current facility is very small - 10’ x 16’ building. It is used for many purposes such as a nursery for orphans, food storage and preparation areas and a space for veterinary procedures. The building and its surrounding is jam-packed with cages, supplies and animals.

A new dedicated veterinary hospital and critical care unit has been built next to the animal nursery. The 10’ x 16’ hospital building will be used for examinations, wound cleaning and other anesthetic medical procedures, surgery, and X-rays. The critical care unit will contain incubators, oxygen and fluid therapy capabilities, and medications for sick and injured wildlife. We have raised money to cover the cost of this building - $4,800.

There are costs that I will incur such as insulating the walls for temperature control, adding fluid-impervious walls for better asepsis and, most importantly, an X-ray machine.

WE NEED TO RAISE $20,000 FOR A NEW X-RAY MACHINE BY JAN 2025

All proceeds from this GoFundMe campaign will go towards setting up the building and the new X-ray machine.

Please generously donate AND send this page to everyone you know so they also can donate to this cause. Opossums need your help and your donations will be affecting their care and wellbeing directly.

I’ll keep you up to date on construction of the hospital, equipment and the availability of other funding sources.

Thanks for your support! I couldn‘t do this without you. And all of those injured and orphaned wild animals will be so very grateful for your help!

The current Animal Nursery building houses animals, food prep facilities and a small veterinary care area (functional but way too crowded!).
