Help William get to UC Merced

Going to college is a dream that I have always had but unfortunately it is an expensive dream. I am asking for support in being able to achieve this dream for me and for future generations in my family. My parents are hard workers; my mother works at a Family Resource Center where she provides support to immigrant families and my father works in construction. Yet, the cost of living in San Francisco is very high and we practically live paycheck to paycheck. This is why my family and I are asking for your support in helping me realize my dream of attending college.
My name is William Orozco, but my loved ones call me Billy. I am a first generation college student and the son of immigrants. I start my freshmen year in the fall of 2018 at UC Merced. My mother and her family came to this country searching for better opportunities for them and future generations. Part of my childhood I was raised by a single mother due to the unforeseen trials and challenges that life sometimes gives us. My mother did the best that she could to provide for me and to raise me after my biological father left us when I was barely out of my toddler years. Fortunately, she found another wonderful man that loves and respects her and that stepped up to the responsibility of fatherhood; he is whom I now call father. I also have a wonderful set of younger twin brothers that came along to complete our little family.
Our family has had many challenges the most recent and probably one of the hardest; especially for my mother has been the loss of my grandmother this past year. My Cobolita! I am her first grandchild and the first to go to college. She will not be here to share in this experience with me but I know that she is always watching over me.
One of the greatest gifts and strengths that I have is my family. My parents, my siblings, my grandfather, and my uncles. No matter how challenging life gets we remain strong and united regardless of distance.
They all support my dream to become a computer engineer and be able to succeed as a first generation college student. I recently graduated from Kipp College Preparatory in San Francisco. A charter school that is housed on third street, which is one of the most underprivileged neighborhoods in San Francisco. At Kipp, I was part of the soccer team, I played percussion in the band, and I was part of the Latin American Student organization. I also supported in the yearbook committee and I have volunteered at a neighborhood after school program; Vision Academy for 3 years. Last summer I had a wonderful opportunity and I was able to participate in the Engineering Possibilities in College Program (EPIC), which helps in educating students for careers of service, leadership and distinction in engineering or other fields. EPIC aims to facilitate participant’s exploration of engineering fields and helps build community. This program helped to reinforce my decision in cementing my future career path and my studies at UC Merced.
Thank you for your time and getting to know my story. I hope that it inspires you in helping me achieve my dream.
