William J Reid Memorial Fund

We mourn the passing of one of our most loved faculty members, Dr. William Reid. Bill began his UCLA career in 2006, when he matched into our Internal Medicine training program after graduating from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He immediately distinguished himself as a compassionate and skilled physician with a preternatural talent for teaching. He received commendation for excellence in Medical Student Teaching during all three years of residency. He led our Resident Medical Jeopardy team to first place at the American College of Physicians, Southern California Meeting in 2007, and a commendable second place at the ACP National Meeting in 2008. Unsurprisingly, he was named UCLA Internal Medicine Program Resident of the Year in 2009 as a Senior. Subsequently, as Hospitalist Faculty and attending physician on the wards at Ronald Reagan, Santa Monica and the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Hospital, he was the most sought-after teacher and mentor. He was awarded the Full-Time faculty teaching award an incredible seven times between 2010 and 2016.

Those of us who had the privilege to know him and work with him remember a selfless, tireless, dedicated, compassionate, sincere and loyal friend and colleague. He had an almost superhuman capacity to care for others and enrich and educate those around him in a warm and endearing way. He hated the limelight and shunned praise and accolades, preferring to quietly retreat to the embrace of the close knit and loving family he cherished so much.

Bill is survived by his wife Fulvia Reid, his 18-year-old son Byron Daniel Reid, his 9-year-old son Guillermo Reid, and his 5-year-old daughter Eliana Reid. His father, William John Reid III and his mother, Rebecca Jean Reid. His two sisters, Brooke Nichole Koenig and Brittany Marie Sturtevant; his brother, Brandon Michael Reid; and two brothers-in-law, Jeremy Donald Koenig and Jacob Dean Sturtevant. He is also loved by his mother- and father-in-law Rosaura Castillo and Luis Gomez.

In the words of his sister Brittany: "Bill was a truly kind and generous man. He loved his family and took every chance to tell each of us that he loved us and was grateful for us. He was funny and silly, and always had great comedic timing. Watching him laugh was also one of the best things because he laughed with his entire body. He was wise and humble, and extremely non-judgmental, accepting all people as they are and giving love freely. He always used his high-level knowledge and critical thinking skills but never let it stop him from being compassionate and empathetic and human. He was just the best. The actual best. And we will love him for the rest of our lives."

A Memorial Service is being planned for March 20th at UCLA at 4:00pm PST to honor his memory.

This GoFundMe Tribute Page is an opportunity for Friends and Family to contribute to a Memorial Fund for Bill’s Family in his memory.
