Williamstown GAA - 1000km Challenge for Charity
Donation protected
Williamstown GAA Club adult teams are thrilled to be in a position to organise this fundraiser for two different organizations, Pieta House and The Galway Hospice Foundation.
Throughout the month of May, our Intermediate and Junior team players will collectively run 1,000km on the road, safely within the 2km radius of our homes until the possibility of restrictions being lifted come May 5th.
We've chosen to donate our proceeds to two special charities who are coming to terms with having no option but to cancel their annual fundraising initiatives.
These are explained below:
- Pieta House -
Founded in Dublin in 2006, Pieta was established to provide freely accessible one-to-one counselling to people suffering from suicidal ideation, engaging in self-harm or to those bereaved by suicide.
With over 240 qualified therapists in 15 centres, they do everything they can to ensure that help is available to those in crisis.
Since Pieta began they've provided counselling to over 44,000 people, with almost 8,000 people coming through their doors in 2019.
Pieta House offer three main services:
Their Prevention Service is delivered through their Resilience Academy, a six week evidence-based programme aimed at equipping students with the tools for emotional resilience.
Their Intervention Service includes one-to-one therapy to rebuild the hope and resilience of those who are suicidal or self harming and provide them with the ability to deal positively with the issues affecting them. They also operate a 24/7 helpline and text service staffed by fully qualified therapists.
Finally, Their Bereavement Service involves working with people that have been affected by suicide. The Suicide Bereavement Counselling services provide free counselling, therapy and support to individuals, couples, families and children. All therapy is carried out by specially trained Bereavement Liaison Officers and offers support whether in the home or at one of our 15 centres.
- Galway Hospice Foundation -
As partners with the Health Service Executive, The Galway Hospice support patients from counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon with advanced diseases needing palliative care to attain the best quality of life possible.
To this day, the State only provides about 70% of what it costs to provide these services. While there is no charge to patients or families for any of the services provided by the Hospice, there is a cost in providing those services.
So, each and every year, the hospice must raise the balance of those funds (30%), which now amount to €2.1 million.
This enables them to continue providing their Community Palliative Care, Day Care and Bereavement Support services, which from the very outset have not been funded by the State.
If Galway Hospice Foundation stop fundraising - these services will simply stop too.
We ask you to donate whatever you can afford to this fundraising drive, with no amount being too small.
The whole club is excited to lend a hand to these fantastic charities who do so much in times of desperate need.
(We will be posting regular updates on the guys progress toward that 1000km mark via our social media sites throughout the month).
Thanking you greatly.
