Willie Ellis Memorial Fund

Willie Ellis (aka Robert Bailey) 12/24/1953 - 6/22/2022
Willie Ellis brightened all of our lives at Lake Merritt. He would show up daily around 6:30, lay out his blanket and meticulously select his wares for the day's sale. So many of us passed by, responded to his greeting, and possibly checked out what he had for sale that day. Some of us donated items. Some of us bought things. Some of us really got to know him and spent time with him.
Willie was often referred to as the Mayor or Greeter of Lake Merritt. A title, well-suited for a gentleman who loved his life at Lake Merritt and had friends from every walk of life.
I have been fortunate enough to know Willie for over 15 years. Bringing him breakfast every morning and having him look after me as much as I cared for him. I somehow found myself as the local point of contact for him when he was admitted to ICU several weeks ago. I got to know his remaining family in Alabama through a few Zoom meetings. I am honored they have given me the rights to collect Willie's remains and hold a memorial for him at Lake Merritt (date TBD).
I am touched, and I know Willie would be overwhelmed, by the number of phone calls and text messages I have received regarding where people can donate to giving him a proper farewell. At this point the plan is to have a memorial to bless his remains at the Lake. With approval from Parks and Rec and provided enough funds are secured, we hope to have a granite bench placed at Willie's "spot". At the very least, we will place a plaque. The remaining funds will either go toward the continued beautification of Lake Merritt (Willie's home) or help the homeless in Oakland.
Thank you all for the outpouring of love for our dear Willie! Lake Merritt will not be the same without him.
