Wilmington Senior Softball Association 25 Years
Donation protected
Senior softball in the Wilmington area was not organized until 1995. It began as a grass roots, volunteer effort which started slowly, but has become a viable activity for 55+ seniors in the Wilmington area. Today there are more than 180 players on 12 teams who meet twice a week during the 60-game season with all games played in Wilmington, NC.
In 2020 the Wilmington Senior Softball Association (WSSA) celebrates its 25th anniversary providing opportunities for anyone who has the desire to participate in slow-pitch softball, to join in this recreational activity.
Plans are underway now to celebrate our 25 year anniversary with a banquet, speakers and presentations, commemorative player caps, and a public opening day ceremony in April 2020 featuring well-known sports figures, government officials, and surprises.
While our players pay a modest annual fee, our non-profit organization - a 501 (c)(7) - incurs annual costs for Wilmington city field rental, umpires, insurance, and other administrative fees. Generous sponsors provide for uniforms, but team equipment, first aid supplies, and protective safety gear need updating or refreshing.
In summary, the WSSA began 25 years ago as an idea promoted by a handful of men who just wanted to play pickup games. From 1995, it has steadily grown and improved; and it is our intent to see it thrive for many years to come.
Funds would be used to help commemorate 25 years of offering senior softball to those in the Wilmington, NC area and promote this physical, sensible activity for active seniors. In addition, funds would be used to secure needed softball equipment and gear and medical supplies.
Thank you for your consideration. Contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated, and if you or anyone you know may be 55 years or older, consider joining us on the field in 2020!
