Wingman Short Film

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Lucas Haviland, and I am a third-year student at DePaul University pursuing a Film and Television degree concentrating in Screenwriting. I am developing a short film called Wingman, which I plan to produce in March.

Wingman follows a gay man who reluctantly agrees to let his straight best friend secure him a date during a night out at a local bar unaware of the trauma awaiting him at the end of their night. After some time apart, Jamie and his best friend Callum go out for drinks at a local bar and catch up, leading to a challenge with Callum acting as Jamie’s wingman for the night and bringing Kyle into the picture. Despite Jamie and Kyle hitting it off, a later encounter that night reveals Kyle’s true intentions, violating Jamie’s boundaries and sparking a broader conversation between Callum and Jamie about their different outlooks on Jamie’s life.

I’m creating this film to portray a type of friendship that so many people value and rely on in their lives that often becomes stereotyped. While this friendship is the film's core, I also wrote this to explore feelings of hopelessness surrounding love and finding a romantic partner and open conversation around the toxicity that can accompany dating within the LGBTQ+ community. This film also tries to get at the “why” behind friendship and what keeps people in our lives even during the ugly moments. With the people I hold closest to me, I continue to learn this every day but, even if we are our own worst enemies, it’s the friends who care about us and will tell us what we need to hear who will always positively impact our lives.

Producing a short film is an expensive endeavor, which makes crowdfunding an integral aspect of this production process. Funding for this project will go towards resources like an intimacy coordinator, production design elements, location expenses, and other equipment fees. All donors who provide $35 or more will receive a special thanks in the credits; however, I am grateful for any and all donations, no matter the size.

Thank you for your time and consideration in supporting my next project! Your generosity plays a foundational role in bringing this story to life!
