On Wednesday July 26, 2023, Katrina expected to start the day as she did the day before. This day would prove to be THE SCARIEST day of her life. Katrina has a son named Kobey who lives with her. Kobey has Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some time after lunch, a coworker noticed that Katrina had not signed in for work, which was was uncommon. The coworker utilized social media to reach out to Katrina’s sister Kajuandra. She didn’t know Kajuandra was Katrina’s sister but she knew Kajuandra and Katrina were connected somehow. And Thank God she reached out! The last time any family member had heard from her was the day before. Katrina did not respond to text messages or phone calls. Kajuandra reached out to Kobey to ask if his mom, Katrina, was picking him up from work. Kobey replied that he had not heard from her and had called several times. Kajuandra’s concerns escalated. Kajuandra typically is only 3 hours away from Katrina and Kobey. On this day she was six hours from Columbia at a conference in Mobile, Alabama. Since Kobey has an intellectual disability, he has a Job Coach, Mr. Mark and Peer Counselors to ensure he gets to work and back home. Kajuandra reached out to Mr. Mark to tell him what the coworker had shared. She then asked him to go to the house to check on Katrina. He agreed. When he got there the door was unlocked— another blessing. He found Katrina when he walked in, sitting on her favorite chair. Katrina was not conscious. Kajuandra was on the phone as Mr. Mark found Katrina. She asked him to immediately call 911. Katrina was transported to Maury Regional Medical Center. She was admitted and diagnosed with a bilateral thalmic infarction. This type of stroke is extremely rare, only 0.6% of stroke victims have this type. Katrina’s prognosis was very guarded. She had altered consciousness, could not talk or walk, or open her eyes.

She has spent the last 5 days at Maury Regional Medical Center in the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit where they started Occupational and Physical therapy with an amazing team to try and get her walking and talking. She is now able sit up in a chair, feed herself, put on socks, and walk.

Katrina has made tremendous progress. The doctors remain very excited about her progress! We are praising God for Healing Mercy and Grace. Katrina will move to specialist rehabilitation hospital in Birmingham, Alabama where she can be close to her mother and sister for support. There she will receive an intensive programme of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. Katrina is having to ‘rewire her brain’ and learn to do everything again.

“A nerve grows 1mm every 24hrs”

It is estimated if she continues progressing at the rate she is going, that she has a chance of 75-90% recovery.

“At home, you will be recovering - not just physically and cognitively but physiologically from the trauma of a major health event - this is not to be underestimated.” (Different Strokes Charity)

Katrina works as contract IT consultant. She does not have Short Term Disability and her Long Term Disability will not start for another 180 days. Sadly this leaves Katrina financially vulnerable. She has an amazing support group. Her road to recovery will take many months meaning she will not be able to work.

This GoFundMe page is to help the Davis’with expenses, including mortgage and bills, but to mainly help support them with Katrina’s recovery, physically and cognitively. Kobey, Katrina’s son will also need care and support as special needs individuals. Kobey will also move to Alabama to be close to his mom. Katrina’s goal is to get back up on the computer and continue to build programs to support better healthcare and support Kobey’s needs.

This is a massive life event that has affected all three of them and turned their lives upside down. We want to make sure that all of them are well supported, financially and emotionally. We know how strong they are and that the sky is the limit for Katrina’s recovery, and all our love is with “Team Katrina” Thank you so much!

To God be the glory! We are praying for full recovery and restoration.
