The picture here is from the early days of the protests at Homestead Child Detention Center. It was February 19th when four members of Congress toured the facility and then gave a press conference. As they spoke of the bunkbeds crammed together in the dorms where there were over 100 kids per bedroom and talking to a girl who had been at the Center for 9 months, they expressed sadness and anger. Sadness that these kids, seeking asylum, were treated like criminals. Anger that this child prison is run by a for-profit corporation.
Three of us witnesses got ourselves into the picture behind them. As I said that was back in February. Now it is over two months later. Many more protesters have come through and a dedicated group is present for an extended stay. This fund is particularly for them. They've put their lives on hold to be present for the kids (who they see and who see them!) and to keep this atrocity visible. There are families waiting for these kids, but the average stay in the camp is 60 days. These kids are considered unaccompanied minors, but many of them entered the U.S. with family or close friends, just not parents. They fled their countries and now, in our country, are being traumatized again. It has to stop!
PLEASE contribute to keep this witness going! Most of us have an immigrant story in our past. We cannot stand by and watch asylum seeking children being treated so cruelly!
By the way, Rep. Donna Shalala and Rep. Deborah Mucarsel Powell, both of Florida, returned to Homestead Detention Center about a week ago and were turned away. This was not just wrong, but illegal.
