PVFD Fire Station Funding

Donation protected
The Protivin Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) is asking for your financial support for a much-needed new fire station to meet the current and future needs of the PVFD and the community we serve. We currently have $500,000 committed, but with your help we hope to raise an additional $200,000 for this project, with construction to be completed in October of 2022.

The PVFD has outgrown its fire station. The station was built in 1968 when the department had only two trucks. This space no longer meets the needs of the department. The PVFD currently has six vehicles parked with merely inches between bumpers and only two overhead entrance/exit doors in the front of the building. Depending on the emergency call, certain trucks have to be moved outside before the needed vehicle can be taken to the scene. Some firefighters have to climb over one of the trucks to get to their gear. This costs precious minutes as every second counts in an emergency. This is especially true because, as an all-volunteer department, it can take several minutes before responders arrive at the station and are ready to roll out trucks. Essential equipment is stacked along the walls creating congested walkways. There is no room for new life saving equipment or vehicles.

The design for our new station includes five overhead doors to allow the necessary vehicles to respond as quickly as possible to emergencies. Firefighter gear lockers will be built along the main entrance wall to allow all members quick access to their individual turnout gear. This design allows room for department growth and storage of rescue equipment. The new station will also have the capability to serve as an emergency shelter if needed.

The PVFD serves and protects roughly 100 square miles of land and roads, stretching between Chickasaw, Howard and Winneshiek counties in rural Iowa. The PVFD provides mutual aid fire and rescue support to ten neighboring fire districts. The department has approximately 22 members. We answer 20-40 emergency calls a year. In addition to emergency calls, our department serves the community by offering fire prevention education sessions, hosts an annual youth art contest during fire prevention week, conducts USDA required CRP burns, and volunteers at local events.
