Wokingham Half Marathon for Dementia UK - Sam B

My name is Sam Bunton and in February 2024, I will be running the Wokingham Half Marathon in aid of Dementia UK.
My Grandad is currently being nursed in a care home following his dementia diagnosis over a year ago, making this charity particularly close to my heart. Dementia has had a huge effect on my Grandad's life, limiting his social life and independence, however with the ongoing family support, healthcare services and charities such as Dementia UK providing support and advice to those diagnosed with dementia, their family and carers, my Grandad has the opportunity to continue doing the things he loves including watching Liverpool FC!

Both of my parents are Mental Health Nurses and following in their footsteps, studying Mental Health Nursing at University has allowed me to widen my knowledge on the effects a dementia diagnosis can have on both an individual and their families. Throughout my training so far, specifically whilst on placement on a Dementia Ward, I have seen how isolating and scary living with dementia can be and this has in turn encouraged me to complete this half marathon to continue raising awareness and support for Dementia.
Supporting me in aid of this charity will help Dementia UK's Admiral Nurses continue providing life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia.
