Women Empowerment in Zanzibar

Do you know how many women don’t have access to adequate menstrual hygiene products?
If not, that's probably because it is still a widespread taboo!
Sanitary pads are a basic human right and should not be a luxury item.
We therefore believe that women should have access to hygiene products worldwide especially during their menstruation!
About the project:
In 2018 Zanzibar Bora initiated the project to address the bad conditions for women during their periods. On the island, all resources are limited, many women currently use old clothes during their menstruation. Menstrual health is still a taboo although it affects many women and girls in their everyday-life. Talking to many women in urban and rural areas, we found a need for practical, low-cost methods of menstruation management. The most suitable solution are menstruation pads, as for religious reasons no other alternative would be used apart from disposable pads.
They are easy to use, can be cleaned without running water and are not a completely new option for the women in Zanzibar.
So we have made it our mission to promote this important and sensitive topic to empower girls and women especially in Zanzibar, Tanzania!
Zanzibar Bora is a local NGO in Zanzibar, Tanzania, which helps to improve the living and health conditions in many ways while protecting the environment.
Our aim is to develop a long-term programme to promote menstrual health through education and the distribution of reusable supplies to women and girls. We want to establish the local production of reusable pads as an affordable and environmental friendly alternative. Our interdisciplinary team is working on educational material to address menstrual management within different age groups and settings.
It is our intention to strengthen the self-confidence of the women in Zanzibar and to give a positive impact to the subject of menstruation.
For now there is still a lot to do!
>> Now we are looking for seed capital to start the local production of pads to lay the groundwork for our women hygiene campaign in Zanzibar. <<
We could then sew pads and present them to the women and girls in desperate need of these products together with educational workshops.
Every euro helps us to give the project more expression and move it forward!
What we can do with your help:
> 50€ for adequate facilities / soap, water supply for one school
> 25€ for one workshop / 25 girls and women
> 15€ 5 pads and 1 wet bag (in Germany one single pad costs on average 15
€)
> 3€ for print out of educational material for one girl/woman
...and strengthen the local economy!
Together we can help to raise awareness on this topic!
Thank you very much for supporting our mission!
For people who want to read about some more facts:
1. If we have aroused your interest you can learn more about what we work on:
An important resource for our educating part about menstruation is the book by Marny Sommer, written in the local language Swahili and in English. If you like, you are welcome to have a look inside under Growth and Changes . It will give you a good impression of how menstruation is dealt with in Tanzania.
2. Furthermore our Zanzibar Bora Calendar 2021 will be released for you at the beginning of November. We created it to give a small insight into our work in Zanzibar while hoping to support our project with the proceeds.
It is the perfect gift for all those who are looking forward to the New Year and like to dream of faraway islands during these times.
Our calendars are available for you in selected shops in Hamburg and on the internet - just write us a short message at: [email redacted]
3. In addition we have already started a cooperation with the Berlin start-up "Kora Mikino " who have provided us with patterns.
