Women in Neuroscience UK's first in-person event!
Donation protected
Women in Neuroscience UK have been invited to host our first exhibition stand and our inaugural in-person event at Alzheimer's Research UK's annual conference, the largest dementia research meeting in the UK.
This will be a historic time for WiNUK, a significant step towards our mission to champion gender equity in neuroscience, however, this will not be possible without generous support from donors like you.
To date, WiNUK has operated with no funds, being volunteer and virtually run. However, to make physical resources for in-person events we will require funding.
Whether you are able to donate or not, we would really appreciate you sharing the link to this campaign on your social media and email lists, with colleagues or classmates, with funding bodies, charities and companies, and with family and friends. Together we can make our first in-person event a success!
Our main aims at ARUK 2024:
1) Raise awareness of Women in Neuroscience UK as an organisation with valuable free resources.
This will be an excellent opportunity to meet WiNUK members for the first time in person and to connect additional people with our inspiring, educational and supportive community.
2) Engage the dementia research community on gender inequities in their working environments.
According to ARUK's recent report on The Impact of Dementia on Women, 60% of dementia researchers are female but only 39% of senior research positions are occupied by women. The gender gaps in dementia research are multifaceted and not widely understood.
In an auditorium of up to 240 people, we hope to share statistics and experiences from panelists to validate the experiences of many and to educate all. The session will be vibrant and interactive, including audience Q&A. Our newly designed survey at the exhibition stand will uncover detailed insights into the issues facing women in our dementia research community today, to influence WiNUK and ARUK projects in the future. Finally, we wish to convey WiNUK's recommendations to help attendees foster more inclusive workplaces to the benefit of everyone.
To achieve our aims, we hope to source funding for:
- An eye-catching standing WiNUK banner.
- Leaflets to promote WiNUK's mission, community and upcoming events.
- Infographic posters on the gender inequities in dementia, for attendees to advocate through putting up in their homes, offices or departments.
- Stickers and badges, for attendees to show their support for women in neuroscience.
- T-shirts with WiNUK branding for our exhibition stand volunteers.
- A second-hand tablet, for attendees to complete an interactive survey and for WiNUK’s mailing list registration for ongoing inspiration, connection and support.
Any surplus donations will be directed towards furthering WiNUK's initiatives such as funding a more accessible web domain, speaker fees, and catering for future in-person events.
Join us in shaping the future of Women in Neuroscience UK. Your support fuels our mission to break barriers and foster a more equitable future in neuroscience.

More about WiNUK:
WiNUK, the only network in the UK specifically designed to support female neuroscientists, was founded by Lizzie English, motivated by her experiences of sexism in science and a lack of female peers and role models. Women in Neuroscience UK has made great strides towards fostering an inclusive online community and championing diversity, with a 40-person volunteer team producing insightful monthly virtual events and engaging social media and blog discussions. We are proud to bring together individuals of all genders and career stages, across the UK and the world, who may be dealing with gender-based discrimination or learning about their biases for the first time. Through the addition of in-person activities, we hope to broaden and deepen WiNUK's impacts of inspiring, connecting and advocating for women interested in neuroscience. Our in-person activities will not be possible without the support of generous funders like you.
