Thank you for clicking! This fundraiser is to raise $700 to recoup the costs associated with setting up the Women's Strike Canada national website. These costs have been paid up front by two volunteers and the website has been integral to the growth of this movement, so let's all chip in a bit to help pay back those who covered the costs out of their own pockets! June 24, 2024 marks the 2nd anniversary of the overturning of Roe v Wade in the U.S. We are standing in solidarity with our American Sisters in their fight to access abortion services if they choose.
This is not only a U.S. issue - our rights in Canada are tenuous and must never be taken for granted. Canada, of course, does not have Roe v. Wade; instead, we have R. v. Morgentaler, the 1988 decision by our own Supreme Court that struck down the abortion provision in Canada’s Criminal Code, finding it ran afoul of the Charter’s guarantee of “security of the person.” Since then, Canada has been without federal laws providing for or denying access to abortion. And in the absence of regulation, access has, in practical fact, varied widely throughout the country. Abortion is allowed in Canada, but even after Morgentaler, it has not always been available.
