We are the people of Wood St. We call our home the wood street commons. We call it home despite being labeled homeless. For many of us it is the longest we have been in a single location. we have grown fond of being greeted by a warm smile and helping hands. We each have different circumstances but have a common goal. Some have jobs, some have chores some give care and we all provide support. As we have been providing for one another and finding our way we have settled here on Wood street in Oakland, California. We are building a community of individuals who would like to offer resources and support for others who are swept into unemployment or homelessness. Treating each other with dignity and putting judgments aside.
We don't place blame or shame.
We will offer relief and safety.
We have all faced struggles. We were all alone once. We have learned that we can overcome obstacles. We can feel included. We can find happiness in our communities. Our goal is to give respite to the hardships and disparities of our current condition. We are a group of unhoused people from the bay area who have settled into a community in West Oakland. We have been fortunate enough to have the help of each other and discovered the value of community outreach. Unfortunately, there are things that we still struggle with. We don't have access to public utilities or the safety of permanent structures. The absence of modern comforts and tools like access to computers and hot water are still obstacles we face daily. As we face off with disconnected politicians and misinformed neighbors we are reaching out to you for ideas, cooperation, temperance, and charitable fiscal support. Help us reach our goals for improving our facilities and stocking our supplies as we continue to grow as a community.
